Streamlight Warns of Risk of Using Off-Brand Batteries

EAGLEVILLE, Pa. - Streamlight, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance flashlights for industrial, fire and rescue, law enforcement professionals and sporting enthusiasts, today issued another warning about purchasing and using inferior quality lithium 123A batteries with its flashlight products or other products. Use of off-brand lithium batteries may present a risk of leakage, fire, explosion or serious personal injury, company officials said.

"Streamlight recommends only the use of U.S. made, high quality lithium batteries with its products, including Streamlight Battery No. CR123A, Panasonic Battery No. CR123A or Duracell Battery No. 123," said Ray Sharrah, Streamlight's Chief Operating Officer. "The use of other batteries, or the mixing of used and new or different brand batteries, could result in fire, explosion or burn hazards."

Sharrah said that a Houston police officer suffered minor injuries on October 4 when a Streamlight flashlight he was using during an investigation reportedly exploded while in use. The flashlight was powered by off-brand Chinese batteries, which were the source of the explosion.

"Streamlight lithium CR123A batteries are manufactured to stringent quality control standards, incorporating safety features which ensure they will not overheat in our high-performance flashlights," explained Sharrah. "By using quality U.S. made lithium battery brands exclusively, Streamlight product users can be assured that they can operate their flashlight products safely at all times." He added that users should never misuse, short circuit, improperly store or discard, disassemble or heat any CR123 batteries above 212° F (100° C).

Streamlight includes a warning about using off-brand batteries on applicable product packages and instructions. Information is also available on the company's website at streamlight.com/education/lithium.

Headquartered in Eagleville, PA, Streamlight, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of high-performance lighting equipment for professional automotive, fire fighting, law enforcement, military, industrial and outdoor applications. NEMA Publishes ANSI/NEMA FL 1-2009 Flashlight Basic Performance Standard

(ROSSLYN, Va.)—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI/NEMA FL 1-2009 Flashlight Basic Performance Standard. It is the first flashlight standard worldwide and introduces definitions and testing methods for flashlight basic performance as well as associated marking. It focuses on directional lighting, not lanterns or area lighting.

ANSI/NEMA FL 1 introduces a uniform way of defining, measuring, and marking basic flashlight performance. The clearly defined test methods and marking rules will help retailers and consumers gain a clearer understanding of the performance provided by a given product. The information will be useful to consumers across a variety of industries and interests, including firefighters, paramedics, police, military, security, outdoor sports and activities, agriculture, and mining. The standard includes an Adobe Illustrator file with icons optional for manufacturers’ use on packaging.

“ANSI/NEMA FL 1 is a breakthrough standard for manufacturers and users of flashlights,” said Peter Nario-Redmond of the Flashlight Standards Committee. “With the inclusion of guidelines for the proper use and styling of the voluntary icons, manufacturers will have the tools to simplify the flashlight purchasing process, making it easy to compare product performance.”

The contents and scope of FL 1 may be viewed, or a hardcopy or electronic copy purchased for $60, by visiting http://www.nema.org/stds/fl1.cfm, or by contacting IHS at 800-854-7179 (within the U.S.), 303-397-7956 (international), 303-397-2740 (fax), or global.ihs.com.

NEMA is the association of electrical and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end use of electricity. These products are used in utility, industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential applications. The association’s Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) Division represents manufacturers of cutting-edge medical diagnostic imaging equipment including MRI, CT, x-ray, and ultrasound products. Worldwide sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing and Mexico City.

STREAMLIGHT INTRODUCES POLYSTYLUS PEN LIGHT

Slim, Ultra-Tough Fiberglass Light Boasts High-Intensity LED
Available in Four LED Colors

Eagleville, PA, July 14, 2009 - Streamlight Inc., a leading provider of
high-performance flashlights for automotive repair, industrial safety,
fire and rescue, law enforcement professionals and sporting enthusiasts,
announced it has introduced the PolyStylus, an ultra-slim, ultra-tough
FiberWrap fiberglass polymer pen light equipped with a high-intensity
LED that is available in four LED colors.

"The PolyStylus pen light provides a versatile tool to help with a wide
variety of tasks," said Streamlight Chief Operating Officer Ray Sharrah.
"The red or green LEDs, for example, can help preserve night vision for
police when on night patrol. The green LED, which doesn't spook game,
also provides an all-purpose light for sporting enthusiasts. Automotive
mechanics are able to see under the hood or chassis while making repairs
with the white LED, while the red or blue LEDs are useful for
identifying trouble spots for close-up work."

Sharrah added the PolyStylus is a perfect light for industrial safety
professionals to identify potential problems on a plant floor, while
fire and rescue workers have a versatile light for pinpointing trouble
spots as they work to put out fires or render first aid under darkened
conditions.

The PolyStylus can be purchased with a single white, green, red or blue
LED, or purchased as a combo pack, featuring a PolyStylus with a white
LED module that can be unscrewed and replaced with any of the three
included color LEDs modules.

The PolyStylus' high-intensity, 5-millimeter LED is impervious to shock
and boasts a 100,000-hour lifetime. In the white mode, the PolyStylus
provides 85 candela peak beam intensity and 9 lumens of measured system
output. The blue mode offers 63 candela peak beam intensity and 1.7
lumens of measured system output; the red mode offers 72 candela peak
beam intensity and 5.1 lumens of measured system output, and the green
mode offers 3.5 lumens of measured system output and 45 candela peak
beam intensity. A color-coordinated parabolic reflector produces a
concentrated beam with optimum peripheral illumination.

The PolyStylus provides up to 24 continuous hours to the 10% lumen
output level for the red beam and 48 continuous hours to the 10% lumen
output level for the white, blue and green beams. Built for heavy-duty
use, the rugged, drop-tested PolyStylus' light-weight, ultra-tough
fiberglass epoxy body resists bending or flexing. The light's unique
non-conductive housing even allows the light to be used safely near
electrical circuits.

Weighing a mere 1.4 ounces, including three AAAA-sized alkaline
batteries, the PolyStylus measures 6.68 inches in length and features a
pocket clip on the end-cap. The light's tail-switch is designed for
one-handed momentary or constant "on" operation. The suggested retail
price for the PolyStylus Combo Pack, which includes a white LED
PolyStylus and three interchangeable green, red and blue LED lamp
modules, is $35.00, while the PolyStylus with a single LED in white or
any one of the three colors is $25.00. It is backed by Streamlight's
Limited Lifetime warranty.

Streamlight Argo HP C4 LED Review

You need one of these in your tool box! I was skeptical the first time I tried the Argo headlamp because they are normally associated with miners or rescue workers in dangerous places. I figured that you needed a hard hat to use this thing. Boy was I wrong. This is now one of my favorite lights!

Here is a great “real world” example of how useful it is: This winter was unusually cold, must be all that global warming. Anyway, one of my kids left the hose attached to the spigot at the side of the house when he gave the dogs water. So that night the temperature dropped ... and of course the hose froze along with the spigot. Naturally, it broke the copper pipe inside the house. Lucky for me, and him, the line had a shut off about 12 inches away. In order to replace the now cracked spigot I had to become a contortionist because it is stuck up in the corner of the basement ceiling with floor trusses and wiring and pipes going everywhere. So there I am standing on the top rung of the ladder, wedged in between the trusses, attempting to un-solder the copper fittings, with a torch in one hand and a wrench in the other. Now if I could only see the pipe!

That’s when it hit me, I need that light! As you guys know, when you're on a ladder, it's easier to yell to your wife or kids to get something than actually climb down and do it yourself. So I yelled to my wife. I asked her to "bring me that light, you know the one that goes on your head". Then I climbed down the ladder and waited for the light to be delivered.

When I eventually got the light on my head, I climbed back up on the ladder and I was actually able to see what I was doing. Not a bad idea when you're holding a lit torch. The point is that this is a great light, hands down ... no pun intended. It has three light intensity settings and is by far the most comfortable headlamp I have ever worn. I get a lot of lights sent to me, for reveiw, from various manufacturers - well, because they want us to sell them on our web site.

The other day I received a “headlamp” from a company new to the headlamp market. Not wanting to be closed-minded, I took it home to test it and threw it in my tool box. I had occasion to use it pretty quickly and was not impressed. For starters, this new headlamp only had a single band to run around your head. The Streamlight Argo has an extra band that goes across the top of your head. I didn't think much about the single-strapped headlamp until I realized that I had a headache. I had to tighten that one, much more than the Streamlight headlamp, because it kept falling down my head as I moved around and got a little sweaty. The Streamlight headlamp's additional strap across the top of your head stops this from happening. In the end, the Streamlight headlamp puts less pressure on your head ... so, no headaches, I think that’s a good thing.

Streamlight Deals

There are some really special deals going on at StreamlightDistributor.com. When Streamlight, Inc. introduced new C4 LED version of some of their flashlights, there were already many distributors that had non-C4 LED versions of the products on the shelves. As a result, StreamlightDistributor.com has setup a page of Streamlight Flashlight Specials with the few items left that are Non-C4 and are available at extremely low prices. I don't think lower prices exist for any of the items that are on special on that page.
